Lahaina Buildings Post-Fire Stability Study

Survey of properties for safety and stability.

Following the devastating fires on Maui in August 2023, various opportunities were provided to professionals in the architectural field to assist with survey work to determine site safety and the condition of remaining structures on the site.

Katie Stephens completed the American Institute of Architects Safety Assessment Program (SAP) training and volunteered twice in September to assist with conducting site safety assessments, in which any remaining portions of buildings that remained were visually assessed to determine if it was safe for others to enter the site, or if further assessment was required to observe potential structural or hazardous material issues. Most of the sites surveyed were in the area of Front Street, and included commercial and residential properties.

In November and December, Katie also volunteered through the AIA to team with a structural engineer to survey identified Historic structures to determine if shoring and/or bracing was needed to help support any remaining portions of the buildings until such time that repairs can be undertaken. Properties surveyed included the Lahaina Jodo Mission, the Maria Lanakila Church, the Pioneer Inn, the Hale Aloha church, and the Hale Pa’ahoa Prison. A summary report was developed for each site, and where appropriate, drawings and details were developed to indicate suggested shoring and bracing to be installed.
