Target’s newest Oʻahu location transforms an existing three-level, 80,000+ SF tenant space into a flagship retail destination rooted in Hawaiʻi’s unique sense of place. AHL served as Designer and Architect of Record, leading design implementation, permitting coordination, and construction administration for the culturally informed tenant improvement.
Guided by a mauka-to-makai (mountain to ocean) narrative, the design integrates locally inspired elements throughout: a glowing albizia wood slat wall, reimagined water feature, and mauka-themed wall greet guests at the entry, while reoriented escalators and cascading light fixtures connect the levels.
Surfboard soffits, a central surfboard-shaped light fixture, and decorative floor patterns reinforce the ocean-inspired theme. Vibrant murals and collaborations with local artists infuse storytelling and cultural context throughout the space, resulting in a modern retail experience that honors Hawaiʻi’s heritage and reflects the spirit of the community.
