The Hawaiʻi State Capitol has been recognized with a Centennial Award at the 2026 AIA Honolulu Design Awards, honoring architecture whose significance has endured for generations.
Presented to projects completed at least 25 years ago, the Centennial Award celebrates buildings that have stood the test of time while continuing to serve their communities with lasting relevance. The recognition reflects not only the Capitol's architectural significance but also its continued role as the civic heart of Hawaiʻi.
Designed by the joint venture of AHL (then Lemmon, Freeth, Haines and Jones) and John Carl Warnecke Associates, the Hawaiʻi State Capitol was selected in 1961 through a statewide design competition involving more than twenty teams. Dedicated in 1969, it was the largest architectural project completed in Hawaiʻi at the time and the first state capitol in the United States designed in a modern architectural style.
Rather than relying on classical architectural traditions, the design draws inspiration from Hawaiʻi's landscape, culture, and identity. Eight columns represent the state's eight main islands, the legislative chambers evoke the volcanic forms from which the islands were born, and the surrounding reflecting pools symbolize the Pacific Ocean, creating the image of an island within the sea. The open-air rotunda reflects the ideals of openness and accessibility, inviting the public to participate in civic life.
More than five decades later, the Hawaiʻi State Capitol continues to fulfill its original purpose as the home of Hawaiʻi's government. Thoughtful preservation and targeted improvements, including enhancements to the reflecting pool and civic plaza, have strengthened accessibility, sustainability, and public engagement while respecting the Capitol's defining architectural character and symbolism.
