Inspired by the vision of a “Bank in a Garden,” First Hawaiian Bank’s new Līhuʻe Banking Center is rooted in both personal growth and community heritage. Spanning 7,800 square feet, the banking center includes two buildings connected by an open-air breezeway and a courtyard landscaped with native plants.
Drawing from Līhuʻe's deep ties to plantation life, the design references the region’s history of sugar cane cultivation through textures, colors, and materials inspired by the ʻāina and the sugar industry. Vibrant greens reference new cane shoots, sun-warmed tones recall mature stalks, and aged finishes take cues from the historic Grove Farm Sugar Plantation.
Growth and renewal carry the garden concept through the design. A cane shoot breaking through the earth symbolizes resilience and perseverance, connecting the concept to First Hawaiian Bank’s role in helping individuals build wealth, stability, and a future.
The banking center includes offices, a conference room, and open meeting areas, with the breezeway providing an open-air environment for employees and customers to meet. The complex also includes 24/7 access to two no-envelope deposit ATMs, a night depository, and a self-service safe deposit box room equipped with biometric entry.
Sustainability is integrated throughout the project with approximately 135 photovoltaic solar panels, a backup battery system, two electric vehicle charging stations, onsite bicycle parking, native plant species, and drip irrigation. Additional features include low-e insulated glass, an insulated roof assembly, energy-efficient light fixtures, solar-powered exterior lighting, low-flow toilets, low-VOC interior finishes, long-lasting terrazzo flooring, and an exterior of precision CMU block.
The architecture, materials, landscape, and open-air spaces honor Līhuʻe’s plantation heritage and Kauaʻi’s garden landscape while reinforcing First Hawaiian Bank’s connection to the community.
